Cat in Barn
by Richard Dinges, Jr.

Once a kitten,
my daughter’s promise
to feed and care
forever, please daddy,
now a mangy
stiff-legged trot
out of shadows,
rusted door hinge
and cat’s yowl
to be fed, exiled
to the barn by daughter
who moved on,
rejected by mother,
tries to jump
into my lap and fails,
still pursuing
a faded memory.
