News of the Crash
by Ann M. DeVenezia

That was no Icarus that tumbled from the sky
in Hasbrouck Heights the other day.
A four-seater crashed on its way from Virginia,
disturbing the peace on a tree-lined street.
Three died instantly.

Thrown from the plane
the fourth sat in the center of a circle of fire
burning by slow degrees,
first his legs
then his arms and body.

This time people noticed
as they stopped from shopping,
walking the dog,
eating dinner,
to watch the white light turn to ashes.
