Feelings from the Old Man
by Charles Kesler

______((After John Ashbery's "Thoughts of a Young Girl")

"It is such an ugly night I had to scream obscenities
From the basement, and to demonstrate I'm furious:
We stepped off the solid footing on the ground
And breathed in the outhouse by the creek.
You were so bad to laugh at me
And now I can't forgive you. Yells, A Giant."

I staggered upstairs early in the morning
And the worry still worked his forehead
As it has since he was born. He sometimes thinks
How to be a little irritating. Oh my son,
My sorry son of my too young wife, pauper,
May you not live out this day!
