willie
by David Sutton

i once corresponded
with a death row inmate
my motive was idealistic
work against the odds and the clock
uncover a flagrant error
free a black man
from the lethal embrace
of alabama's yellow mama
no such luck
willie "butch"clisby jr did it
killed fletcher handley of birmingham
struck him on the head with an ax
just to steal a few dollars
you say boo-hoo
another social parasite
got what he deserved
read the old testament
you godless bleeding-heart liberal
eye for an eye
tooth for a tooth
end of discussion
on 28 april 1995
i wonder if jesus
was in the death chamber
holding willie's hand
and whispering
go in peace
your sins are forgiven
