About the Journal
Our Purpose:
Red River Review is an online literary journal. Its main purpose has always been to publish well-crafted poetry using the best electronic means available.
Our Philosophy / Guidelines:
The editorial philosophy is simple: It is the duty of the writer to accurately chronicle our times and to reflect honestly on how these events affect us. Poetry which strikes a truth, which artfully conveys the human condition is most likely to be selected. Vulgarity and coarseness are part of our daily life, and are thus valid. Life isn't always pretty. However vulgarity and coarseness, just for the sake of the exercise, doesn't generally benefit anyone.
Red River Review is open to all styles of writing. Abstract, beat, confessional, free verse, synthetic, formal -- we will publish just about anything that has the authenticity and realism we're seeking. With this said, however, rhymed poetry of any nature is rarely accepted.
The Process:
We publish on the second month of each quarter. Our issues are presented in February, May, August, and November of any given year. The deadlines for submissions are as follows:
February Issue - Submit by December 31st
May Issue - Submit by March 31st
August Issue - Submit by June 30th
November Issue - Submit by September 30th
The editor responds to email inquires sent to Info@redriverreview.com, however, due to problems with attachment versions and virus issues, emailed submissions will not be accepted. We accept submissions only through our web site page. Please feel free to use this link Submissions or the "Submissions" link on our issue pages to send us your work. As we are an electronic literary journal, we do not accept submissions sent through postal mail.
The editor often comments on the poems that are submitted and may suggest revisions or expansions of the work. These are only suggestions and are not meant to bind any one writer to conforming to our stylistic desires. We are all writers working in the craft. Many times by conversing about the poetic elements employed by the poet we can see where the strengths and the weaknesses lie in the work and move ourselves and the poem forward.
We do not accept previously published work or simultaneous submissions. Red River Review seeks first rights to publication and anthology rights for a possible Red River Review anthology. All other rights revert to the author. Any poem republished out of Red River Review should be properly cited. Please be aware that your poems are archived in our back issues. We cannot take them down on request as then it would not be archives but simply poems left behind.
Please read the journal before submitting. It’s free and you have no excuse.

About the Editor & Publisher

Publisher | Bob McCranie is the Publisher and former Editor of Red River Review and one of the founding members of the Dallas Poets Community. Bob is the former editor of both The Dallas Review and the UT-Dallas student journal, Sojourn. In January of 1994 Bob received his Master of Fine Arts in Writing from Vermont College where he studied under Mark Doty and the late Lynda Hull. He has published poetry in New Texas 2002 , Bay Windows and the anthology "New Dudes - Gents, Badboys, and Barbarians II" (Windstorm Creative Press) . He has previously published work in A&U -America's AIDS Magazine, RFD, Bay Windows, MindPurge, Nightfire, Contexas, the University of Southwestern Louisiana Chapbook, PIF Magazine, CleanSheets and The James White Review. Bob won the 1992 John Z. Bennett Award for Poetry from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and was a finalist in the 2002 Inkwell Press poetry prize.

CoEditor | Michelle Hartman's first book of poetry, Disenchanted and Disgruntled, from Lamar University Press, is available from Amazon. Her work can also be found in Crannog, Poetry Quarterly, The Pedestal Magazine, Raleigh Review, San Pedro River Review, Pacific Review, Concho River Review, RiverSedge, Illya’s Honey, among others, and numerous anthologies. A multiple Pushcart nominee, her work has also appeared overseas in Ireland, Germany, Australia, Canada and Nepal. A native Texan, she holds a BS in Political Science-Pre Law from Texas Wesleyan University and a Certificate in Paralegal studies from Tarrant County College.
