Say A Prayer Before Complaining
by Debra J. Harmes Kurth

Immobilized by images
broadcast in technicolor
from manicured voices
carried on now still air.

Katrina was a category five
downgraded--
it could have been worse, they said
much worse.

Tell that to

A husband
who had to let go of his wife
to save his grandchildren.

Little ones
whose families now run
with the ghosts of Gulf Port.

Those that clung to coffins
floating with the risen dead
waiting to be rescued.

Thousands upon thousands
that didn't have much
and now have nothing.

Mothers and Fathers of infants
and every person that held the dying
without being able to help.

And tell that to the volunteers
that left the comforts of home
to wade in the waters of death.

As you wait in line
complaining about the price of gas,
remember--it is much worse
and say a prayer
