Summer Outage Inside
by Diane Webster

Waiting for electricity to regenerate itself
to surge through lines ending in a switch
of luxury permanently off now minutes…
longer minutes hotter outside than inside
but not cool inside wondering when food
begins to spoil in the refrigerator
and temptation to look at ice cream
slowly oozing to liquid as hours
tick silently on frozen clock hands
or darkened digital displays dreary
behind curtains drawn to shield out
summer sun too dark to read
only to fan the cat sprawled on linoleum
wondering why the air conditioning is off
and frowning at her human caretaker.
