Witch Five
by Richard Dinges, Jr.

Nestled in a basement
corner, protected from
dark by a bare bulb,
TV and footsteps
muffled overhead,
echoes and warnings,
watched by her cat
from shadows. Two
eyes reflect light.
Down below trees,
roots press concrete
block foundations,
cracks to allow
good clean earth
to dust her pages,
cover black words
she no longer reads.
