A View of Life Through the Lens of Cancer
by Hank Jones
|
You were always going to die
But you didn’t know when
And that was the gift
Though you didn’t know it.
Because when you’re told you’re going to die
And you can see that place in the not too distant future
That doesn’t include you
It has the effect of ruining everything.
The beautiful day with its green grass and sunshine
Blue sky and birds calling
Brings no comfort
Seems designed for someone else’s joy
No music that doesn’t sound tinny
No movie that doesn’t seem false
No words that get up and dance
They just lie there
Lifeless on the white page
As they must always have done.
