“Mother Tosses Three Children into San Francisco Bay”
by Robert Wynne

- Knight Ridder Headline, 10/20/05

Mom dropped me first
and I remembered
telling her I had dreamt

my arms were wings
which was why
I couldn’t learn

to swim, built as I was
for the sky. The city
spread before me

as I fell: the bridge
that carried us here
and buildings reaching

away from sea spray
glistening the edges
of everything. I wonder

how long I’ll have to wait
for my brothers. The water
is a cold mouth

swallowing light
as I stretch my arms wide
and fly deeper.
