In Country We Trust
by Linda Bennett

A child drew a picture:
Horizontally, white blots on a blue background,
Vertical stripes of white and red:
A flag transmuted to
An executioner's tool:
Christ's cross.

Our mottos:
In God we trust,
God bless America,
One nation under God,
Co-mingle religion and patriotism
Into an inky smear
Where strokes of one cozy up to the other
And both become blurred, indistinct.
