Lutheran Priest in the Field
by Alex Goukassian

You might wonder
why I'm writing this.
Not to please or to displease,
but to create a man
lying on his back
and staring at his life.

He hears the whistling of the wind
and the bluesy rendition
of "A Mighty Fortress"
by a chorus of grasshoppers.

And he thinks about the girl
whom he met so many years ago,
the one that ran from him
and left him stranded
in the seminary.
