Visionary
by Brenda Roberts

A look of concentration and
abstract fear crossed his
face.

"I'm afraid I will die in my sleep tonight."

She hugged him and said with more
confidence than she felt.

"That won't happen tonight."

"You promise?"

"Yes."

And then he was in bed asleep
in a room separate from where
she slept.

And on this fifth anniversary
of another roommate who
stopped breathing forever....

she tossed and turned. Dozed off
and on and woke wondering if
she lied to him.
