The Human Creature is a Lonely Being: An Early Christmas Card
by Christopher Caldwell

for Richard Eberhart

We hurt.

All crippled bones and
ineffectual complacency.
This is the human creature.

Fear, the root.

And you, fearless, are a liar.
It will catch you in the end.
This fear. This death waiting.

Touch or smiling silence
the true gift within
this lonely press.

No other life than this.

New death.
Old birth.
Your efforts are soul in action.

Move swiftly while death blinks.
