thanksgiving dinner
by judi goldberg

in the garden
before the first frost
after the first rains
between sips of green tea
late blooming salvia
fragrant chrysanthemum
new shoots on the calamint
3 lemons for the pie
mallow gone wild
the last yellow roses

or sometime on the phone
talking to Tante Besard
about a capful of vanilla in the meringue
cocoanut or not in the fruit salad
yellow candles and dried corn
for the centerpiece

or on the shopping list
somewhere between the sweet potatoes
turkey
cranberries
cooking wine
bananas mandarin oranges
onions
the car went off the road
mushrooms
raisins
milk and
my young daughter
died

on the short trip home
before I got to the hospital
before I knew she wrote poetry

before dinner
