Divorce Car
by Susan Hoffman

the judge signs the papers
mother and children pack suitcases
they leave town in a brand new car
not an Oldsmobile 88 like the father owns
but a turquoise and white two-door
fifty-six Chevrolet
steering wheel huge as a globe
white sidewall tires rolling through
red river dust toward the Four Corners

the family never looks back
not at the dog whining in the yard
not at the man whose body already
is being torn off photographs
not at the town where people watch
their leaving

the divorce car crosses the Brazos River
a hawk dives at a snake near the water
and misses
