Sleeping with the Enemy
by David Bowles

tangled and
splayed,
moonlight glittering against
the sheen of naked limbs,
my heart and brain twitching
with the flood of
adrenaline and testosterone
as you drop contented and still
into sleep.

tomorrow we will
grapple
once again.
tomorrow I will become
once more
the useless intellectual
selfish and weak
who has ruined your life,
enslaving you.

tomorrow you will scowl
like a harridan
and beat the drums of
your cruel indignation
with the bones of
the past.
tomorrow we will
seize afresh our darts
and shields.

but for these few hours
I’ll watch you dream
your features slack
unrecognizable
and imagine
that love just might
survive
a few more bloody
skirmishes.
