Chopping Cotton
by Sydney Portilla-Diggs

when Sherman
was a boy he took a
job in the cotton fields cause
it was the only way black kids
earned money in those days
walked up
and down the rows with
a hoe chopping weeds and
pulling vines from round the
cotton plants
don't like to
think of him walking
those miles and miles between the
rows of cotton in the sticky
mississippi heat
minimum wage was just
a sly way of reinventing slavery cause
he didn't see no white kids
chopping cotton
