Municipal Court, 3 p.m.
by V.P. Crowe

"City Ordinance 60301.925
 specifically prohibits grass or weeds
 over 12 inches in height
 on residential or commercial property"

I explained that I'd begun to cut the lot,
meaning to ease around the buttercups,
but farther on I found the tiny
purple and white and yellow flowers
that really can't be seen from the road.
And the weeds, you see -- in three weeks
they'll be back, but the flowers
only bloom once each year.
If I cut them before they seed,
well -- they might not return at all,
and then all we'd have is weeds.

I've been in there.  There are no rats
or snakes, and surely the spring's been wet
enough that fire's not a threat.
Come.  Let me show you the tiny
purple and white and yellow flowers
that really can't be seen from the road.
They'll be gone in a month or so, and

-- then I'll mow.
