Southwest Harvest
by Alan Greenwood

    There comes a time
    in autumn
    when reapers glean
    the crops
    from fields tilled
    for harvest.

    ____dodging startling fall
    rains;
    ____collecting cotton,
    peanuts, onions, potatoes,
    apples that survived
    the spring's last
    ____eradicating frost.

    Learning to pick
    chile pods.
    ____Squatting to shit
    in fields
    ____disdained by
    some who
    rinse guilt
    and contagion
    from wax apples
    and sprayed
    _yellow squash.
