Autumn's Counterpoint
by James Gramann

On November's
rose sparrows
perch their melody,
budding feathers
trellised at my
fence.

Somber pools of
nomad birds
muddle at the
feeder, their
continuo of
undulled hunger

harmony to
sparrows'
punctuated
chant--As rich and
soulful as this
counterpoint the

years composing
autumn. Quiet
restlessness and
hunger tinge a
full and flagrant
rose.
