Thoughts About Death
by Frances Briggs

I saw the sign
"The rapture is coming."

What a lovely thought
to raise the body
up to heaven
with uncorrupted flesh
without decay
unlike the grass we put
in those black plastic bags
full of foul smells
and sprouting maggots
from sitting too long
in the hot sun.

I protect myself--
when I can--
from death.

It is here though
even if I always
turn my head away
when I see a dog
dead in the road.
