Belief
by Billy Antonio

They cite an old belief that one can acquire
certain valued characteristics of a creature by eating it.
-from Asiaweek

So is it true then?
You gain something more
Than the substance from
What you eat, much more
Than the calories
And the fats. It is
Not just sustenance.
If it is true
Then sautéed monkey’s brain
For cunning, and from
Hard-boiled turtle eggs
Longevity.
Sorry, I don’t eat
Exotic dishes
You say? But then
Is it the taste
You ignore? Or is it
The fact that
It’s stewed snake meat?
Besides, my dear,
You miss the whole point.
If it is true
Then the valued essence
Like the chopped meat
Is seared in the skillet.
