You Could Tell
by Charles Kesler

"All wars are boyish, and are fought by boys,"
--Herman Melville, author of MOBY DICK

I went to Vietnam
as a rifleman.
I had just turned 19.
I was only 13 inside.
You could tell
by the way I hopped around
my mother’s living room
dodging bullets and grenades
as I practiced for combat
during my 30 day leave
before going to Vietnam.
