Suburbia
by Patty Mooney

They took pride in their lush lawns
weekly combed out the tangles
and applied shears - a crewcut
that within seven days spilled up
into a shock of locks
prolific as the nails on a skeleton
never whining about the style and
smiling mint-jelly bright
under the sun's caresses.
