Two Pictures in a Psychiatrist's Office
by Joe Ahearn

Three children dressed in creased Jazz Age hats
& old frock coats dance the cobbles
of a piquant old city.

The leftmost blonde tucks a violin beneath his chin
& the other, also blonde, kisses a smiling girl
beneath the fronds of a fat east-leaning rose.

Looking right, into the next frame, we notice
how the white doors open outwards onto the sea
& how the sea, its echoing wavelets, terrifies.
