To the Unknown Voice
by Neil Ellman

(after the painting by Wassily Kandinsky)

Barely heard
above the clamor
of competing choruses
in shapeless robes
at odds with themselves
the universe
at odds
with the shape of sound
__as words
barely audible
almost comprehensible
the promise of creation
speaking in a voice
we scarcely know.
