JAZZ IN JULY


The slow-turning music laces the air,
mellows the space. The beats punctuate
my thoughts, change their shape, and
make them stretch into
____________________feeling your presence
____________________so many measures
____________________away from here
where I balance on a bar stool
left behind on a twilit patio,
listening to jazz in July
and wondering why
the musical miles between us,
drummers opposing, piano
going soft.
