the enigma of arrival
by Michael Helsem

in the days before the dark
we thought about everything else
in this morbid waltz
lit with thunder-bark

we bought our conscience off
in the days before the dark
saying: good work
should be good enough

and when someone new
felt the lightning fork
in the days before the dark
we would shun the fire

all our answers lurk
where the map runs out
teach us to fadge dark-sight
in the days before the dark
