bird girl statue in savannah cemetery
by Stanley M Noah

symmetrical in bronze
she stood alone
not beside a loved one gone
but a little indifferent
with calm dignity, shy-like,

holding shallow bowls
one in each hand
to catch rain water
for birds, and I wondered
what her silent prose symbolized--

may be something peaceful as
death is light as a feather thus
offering flight for the soul to
escape what the body no longer
demanded like a quiet reminiscence
