Follow?
by Jeff Santosuosso

That I am behind you is obvious.

To say I follow you is clear.

To say that you are aware of me is apparent.

That you look behind you,
your pace quickens,
and mine does likewise,
is a matter of fact.

Your heart beating faster,
your sweat turning cold,
your hands tightening
are all understandable.

For my pupils to dilate,
my teeth to clench,
my nostrils to flare
are also understandable.

That I have gained on you,
I can hear you breathe,
you can hear me breathe
are natural.

For you to duck into the store
implies an awareness.
For me to pass by
also implies an awareness.

For me to walk the other side of the street
next time
implies a different awareness.
