Unbearably Sharp
by J. Darrell Kirkley

stand before the huge
portal bore ─cold-blued steel
flame ignites
fuse flick a piercing hiss
blood curl fright
then sudden roar
forceful as thunder
five pound cast iron ball
set into blurred motion
flashes of black smoke
blast wickedly forth
aimed at my gut
the explosion
rips me open
unbearably sharp
pain welcomes death

three years
─her memories
eternal love
undying hurt
