Egyptian Royalty
by Bob Bradshaw

When she last lay down,
perfumed in oils,
she was royalty. Now she is housed
with carpenters and bread makers.
Today she arrived, escorted
by our staff.
Any woman can be violated.
Subjected to chemical analysis
she will be stripped of secrets.
Already x-rays show she suffered
from lower back pain
and a spine that curved
like a slow river. There are three vertebrae
stacked
like stones wedged
against each other.
Other tests show that she
never gave birth.
After her exam is complete
she will be warehoused
with the other mummies
from this dynasty.
Resurrection
was always
a lie.
