Black Dog
by Ann Howells

three days of silent tears
a seeping lamentation

pipe smoke like incense
his chair a shrine at which the children play

she carries him inside her now

moves, untouching and untouched
ghost girl among the relatives

he is soapstone
he is tallow
the black dog does not bark at his arrival
he is legend
he is chronicle

she moves, ghost girl among the relatives
untouching and untouched

carries him inside her now

his chair a shrine at which the children play
pipe smoke like incense

three days of seeping lamentation
silent tears
