Sense Ay'
by Matthew Hudak

The karate sensei bolstered
his short income as a L.E.O.
rousting the downtrodden on the pier.

Spoke knowing words to trigger reprisal
easily overcome.
Five day fasts are training programs shunned.
Akimbo, flailing, bone dominant specimens
cracked the greasy surface succeeding
wails across the scale.

Officer Sensei scribbled reports.
Dictionary close; pages with "imminent" and "threat"
highlighted and dog-eared.

On his birthday, Sensei
put the boot to a seeming sleeper.
Forgot to react. The vision of
said boot gliding behind his forehead.

Victims broke through shadows as his
shoulders whacked against wet wood.
Sensei sought breath.
More so when the shoulder flip
introduced the slime green water.

With cadence the homeless twelve
emptied pockets of paper, coin, and misery
then dove in under premise to help Officer Sensei.
Decency masquerading delay.

Adroit avenger gathering money then
finding the bus depot.
Time for a sandwich before
departing for the next announced town.

Twelve statements recounting saving Officer Sensei
frame the ridicule his compadres
still serve.
