the box
by Maureen Kingston

topics suitable for poetry must come in the proper box
the garden, the grave, god, her hotbox & his prison cell
life no bigger than works & the painter’s frame
but O & Lo & Woe is me
when I check more than one box on the census form
when I dare to add dimension to the town square
rejection slips abound & questions of fit & check please!
