Lucky Bamboo (2002)
by Carie Novikoff

Today men and women are bleeding
and I have decided to buy
lucky bamboo

through the swinging metal doors
into the frigid place where
severed flowers wait in their buckets

small bundles
little corpses waiting
in their barracks

I cross my arms to the coldness
(Men and Women are dying in Iraq)
I exit for warmth

the green stalks I desire are there
on the counter, glowing in the filtered sun
lucky bamboo
