(Black) America's son
by Sydney Portilla-Diggs

Head pounding
like a judge's gavel
in slow motion.
One more mother
choking back an ocean
of bitter tears,
trying not to look back
over her shoulders
as the speedometer
eats up the miles
in the car,
as she leaves
her son behind her,
another young black
man locked behind bars.
