Icarus Eloping
by Steve Klepetar

"--the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,
had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on."

W. H. Auden

Until this moment I have lied
about everything, about how
far my wings could carry us.
I should not have looked
directly into the sun or spent
my last few coins. I should
not have stopped last night
at the outcrop café where
they sold me all those colorful
balls. I should have said no
when they asked me to dance
on the air, hovering above
tables, nearly kicking over all
the glasses and drinks, feathers
dropping like sea foam, like snow.
