Possumhaw
by Tony A. Thompson

As a child of the summer
growing on the banks
of the dried riverbed
you're ready for the onslaught
of mammals:
possums, raccoons, and foxes
that compete for your fruit
to feed themselves
during this drought.

Centuries ago your crop nourishment
for the Native Americans.
Indian bananas they named
your fruit. Dried in the winter
for the returning warrior
back from the hunt
for survival of his tribe.
