Stone, remembered
by Kelley Jean White MD

This is not the first time I have chosen a stone
to fit my palm, a stone whose cool weight was
good to press against the hot places
on my face, my neck, my elbow, knee.
It is not the first stone I have carried
waiting for the moment to choose
between throwing
or swallowing
its angry weight.
