some snakes grow on trees
when they ripen and split
baby snakes fall out

some snakes live in water
slither briefly
_______in gutters and drains

in winter there are rivers of snakes

some snakes are sugar-coated
_______others are best eaten
with red wine and bolognaise sauce

some snakes are domesticated
_______hide behind televisions
_______eat rubbish and dust

some snakes are so small
they can coil inside a human brain

and some snakes have adapted
to life on the outside of the body

the snake of a pickpocket’s hand
the snake of a woman’s tongue
the snake between a man’s legs
