El Salvado, 1980
by Dennis J Bernstein

A caravan of loss rolls by my window.
I slide open the glass and listen
to the sounds of deep mourning
as I have never heard them sung before.
Their village is in flames.
The bridge of peace blown sky high.
And they have nowhere to go.
