Palimpsest Soul
by David Bowles

Erased and scraped
And acid-washed,
Emotions inverted,
My knowledge retooled,
Experience scoured
And edited clean,
Identity fresh,
A wholly new man.
Yet there in faint tracings
Like delicate scars—
The ghost of one who loved you,
The ghost of one you loved.
