Small Fish
by Mark Danowsky

When asked if I was ready
to sit in a chair all day

I opted for another year
of kindergarten.

When asked if I wanted
to be a big fish in a small pond

I decided not to go to college
in New York City.

When I considered going on to play
language games in graduate school

I decided we are all small fish
and went to work.

When the Great Recession hit
many of us opted to stay

in a holding pattern
and many more had no choice

but to become the kind of fish
real good at treading water.
