Sweetness
by Jeff Santosuosso

You’ve been melting candy canes on the paper again
spiraling sugar lines
unwinding across the molten letters
The corners of the pages drip verse
The corners of my mouth drip the same
I lick away at the lustrous language
You keep melting and my tongue reddens
as fast as my pupils dilate and my heart beats

Drip on, my friend
Liquefy confection all through the paper
Peppermint stick those pages like my fingers
I can’t touch anything because
I’m thick with the sweetness
I can barely remove
by slowly pulling them through my pursed red lips
