Turn Away
by Steve Klepetar

Pour your trinkets on the fire
and watch them burn –
observe as they bubble and transform
leaving your flesh empty as light.

Neither pride, nor lust, but calm,
illusive pillow at the center of things,
soft nothing returning your eyes to rest.

Turn away from the smoke and breathe.
Today you are rich, even as a chill comes on
and summer fades in yellowing leaves.
In early morning, birdsong balances on the wind.
