If Ever I Loved Thunder
by Carol Hamilton

_______and I always did, today
after long drought,
I love it more, remember
it scary in past tents
or climbing drenched
over the car seat, having
child-proof locked myself
in the back, then running
to you again, dodging bolts
as Zeus-thrown and impressive
as ever, we the tiny skimming
targets on a tiny target ball
in space, and the rumble
tells of our escape, one more
lovely taunt, a reverberation
of all our many reprieves.
